The annual Fishing Derby is an event offered free of charge to all Nottingham Residents ages 15 and under on the Saturday before Mother's Day. Trophies are awarded to the largest fish caught by a child in four age categories, and there are goodie bags and a raffle for all participants.
Check-in begins at 7:15 am on Rt 152 just beside the river next to Flutter Street. Fishing begins at 8 am and fish (up to five per child) must be measured by 11:45 am so that we can hand out the prizes at 12 noon. Everyone must bring their own equipment, but bait will be provided thanks to Liar's Paradise and Demmon's Store. Children under five must wear lifejackets (though no one is allowed in the water), and children under 13 must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian (at least one per household).
Since this event is for the children, parents are not allowed to fish but may assist their children with their lines. Everyone has a great time at this event, and sometimes some pretty big fish come out of the river! Suffice it to say that many families have fish dinners that night in Nottingham.
The Fishing Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 8, 2010. Happy fishing!
