Swim Lessons
Town Beach

The beach is open to all Nottingham residents from 9 am to 7 pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting. One or two lifeguards are on duty Monday-Friday 9 am-5 pm July 10-September 1 when the beach is open.  During swim lessons, we also offer arts & crafts at the picnic area, free of charge.


Swim Lessons

In the summer of 2008 we will offer two swim sessions with a fee of $10 each, both subject to space availability:

Session 1: July 7 through July 25
Session 2: July 28 through August 15


All lessons are on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, at the following times:

9:45 AM – 10:15 AM:  Level 3A
10:25 AM – 10:55 AM:  Level 2A
11:05 AM – 11:35 PM:  Level 1A
11:45 PM – 12:05 PM:  Bubble Blowers 1
12:10 PM – 12:30 PM:  Bubble Blowers 2
1:10 PM – 1:40 PM:  Level 1B
1:50 PM – 2:20 PM:  Level 2B
2:30 PM –3:00 PM:  Level 3B
3:10 PM – 3:40 PM:  Level 4
3:50 PM – 4:20 PM:  Level 5
4:30 PM – 5:00 PM:  Level 6

American Red Cross Swim Levels - revised in 2005

Bubble Blowers 1 (6 months-2 years) & 2 (3 years - 5 years)
Prerequisites: There is not a prerequisite for this level. 6 months – 5 years.
Course Description: Bubble Blowers is for children and their Parents. Skills taught include floats, glides, kicks, arm movement, blowing bubbles, exploring underwater, and lifejackets. All skills are performed with the assistance of parents.

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills
Prerequisites: Participants must be at least 4 years old at the start of the lessons.
Course Description: Level I is an introduction to skills that will be developed the upper levels. Skills taught at this level include: putting faces in the water, blowing bubbles, floating with support, exploring different arm and leg movements in the water, kicking with kickboards, and safety information.

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Prerequisites: Completion of all Level 1 skills.
Course Description: New skills taught in Level 2 include: going underwater, and glides independently, rolling over from the stomach to the back, an introduction to treading water, swimming on the back, front and side, as well as safety information.

Level 3: Stroke Development
Prerequisites: Completion of all Level 2 skills.
Course Description: Students begin to develop their swimming strokes in Level 3. New skills taught include: rotary breathing, front crawl, dolphin kick, back crawl and safety information.

Level 4: Stroke Improvement
Prerequisites: Completion of all Level 3 skills.
Course Description: In Level 4, students build upon the fundamentals learned in Levels 1-3. New skills taught include: swimming underwater, survival floating, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, scissors kick and safety information.

Level 5: Stroke Refinement
Prerequisites: Completion of all Level 4 skills.
Course Description: In Level 5, students begin to swim greater distances, while perfecting their stokes. New skills taught include: tuck and pike surface dives, survival swimming, sidestroke, and safety information.

Level 6: Personal Water Safety
Prerequisites: Completion of all Level 5 skills.
Course Description: In Level 6, students learn self-rescue techniques in addition to building endurance in their swimming.

Please note there is no difference in skills between the A and B sections of each level.
